Ground Cinnamon Recalls Over Elevated Lead Levels Issued by FDA

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added more ground cinnamon products to a health alert due to elevated lead levels. The latest additions include HAETAE, Roshni, Durra, and Wise Wife brands.

To date, the FDA has issued alerts for 16 ground cinnamon products since summer 2024, including Jiva Organic ground cinnamon in September. The agency recommends that consumers throw away the affected products and avoid purchasing them.

Elevated levels of lead can be hazardous to health, particularly in children, who may experience permanent damage to their central nervous system if exposed for weeks or months. Adults with chronic lead exposure may suffer from kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects.

Symptoms of lead poisoning differ between children and adults but include development delays, learning difficulties, irritability, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, hearing loss, seizures, and mood disorders.

Consumers who purchased recalled Wise Wife brand Ground Cinnamon should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The FDA is urging consumers to contact SLR Food Distribution at 516-437-3782 with questions or concerns.
