The General Services Administration (GSA) has announced a major 10-year contract worth $840 million for 10 million megawatt-hours of electricity from Constellation, the nation’s largest nuclear fleet operator. The deal provides a significant boost to the nuclear industry and is part of a growing trend among tech companies seeking reliable energy sources.
Constellation will generate 135 megawatts of additional capacity under the contract, which will be used by federal agencies and other organizations. The GSA has also agreed to purchase 2.4 million megawatt-hours of electricity from Constellation over the next decade. This deal is expected to provide budgetary stability for federal agencies as data centers drive up electricity demand.
The nuclear energy sector has seen a surge in investment in recent years, with several big tech companies, including Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft, signing major deals. The Biden administration’s plan to transition the US away from fossil fuels also includes nuclear energy as a key component.
“This historic procurement locks in a cost-competitive, reliable supply of nuclear energy,” said GSA administrator Robin Carnahan. “We’re demonstrating how the federal government can join major corporate clean energy buyers in spurring new nuclear energy capacity and ensuring a reliable, affordable supply of clean energy for everyone.”
