The debate on whether premium video games should have higher price tags has gained traction again, this time with Matthew Ball’s comments that Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) might be priced at $80-$100 in the USA. This move could help increase prices of other titles by $10-20, and some argue it could lead to a shift away from predatory microtransactions.
Larian Studios’ director of publishing Michael Douse weighed in on the topic, stating that while GTA 6’s price might not be reasonable for most players, it’s unlikely to happen with the game’s massive budget. However, he suggested that if any game can make such a move, it’s Rockstar Games, and others will follow suit.
Douse pointed out that digital distribution has eliminated traditional checks on game availability, making it harder for consumers to compare prices. He believes that publishers are driven by profit margins rather than developer salaries or player satisfaction.
As the gaming industry continues to grapple with its business model, some argue that a full-scale collapse might be necessary to reset the industry’s priorities. Others suggest focusing on changing consumer behavior and marketing strategies to create more affordable options without sacrificing quality.
