GTA VI Price Tag Sparks Industry Backlash

Grand Theft Auto fans may have had a heart attack after hearing analyst Michael Pachter predict that GTA VI could launch at $100. However, another analyst, Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics, disputes this claim, citing three major reasons why Rockstar should not charge such an exorbitant price.

Firstly, the real cash cow for Rockstar is GTA Online, with its recurring revenue streams. Limiting the game’s audience at launch would be counterproductive and could exacerbate a global cost-of-living crisis. Secondly, players are hesitant to switch from GTA 5, making it one of the biggest threats to GTA VI’s success. The live service model for gaming is highly competitive, with platforms like TikTok and Netflix drawing in massive audiences.

Elliott suggests that Rockstar can charge a premium price for a higher-tier edition, offering early access and exclusive content, while keeping the base game at an affordable $80. This approach would allow players to purchase the game they want at a price they’re willing to pay. Elliott believes this is the most sensible decision, considering GTA 5’s massive commercial success, with over 215 million copies sold.

If Rockstar were to charge $100 for the base version, it could spark industry backlash and potentially lead to boycotts. With an anticipated launch on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, followed by a PC release, fans are eagerly waiting for more information.
