Guatemala Bus Crash Kills 54 People, Injures Dozens

At least 54 people were killed when a bus veered off a bridge into a ravine in Guatemala City on Monday. The accident occurred on the Belize Bridge in zone six of the Guatemalan capital.

Emergency teams rescued people from the wreckage using headlamps and flashlights, but later had to recover bodies from the scene. Images posted on social media show the bus overturned and partially submerged in water, with debris scattered around it both on the ground and in the water.

The Guatemala City Mayor, Ricardo Quiñonez Lemus, deployed all emergency agencies to aid rescue efforts. The President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, declared a period of national mourning, saying “Their pain is my pain”. The Guatemalan Red Cross provided psychological support to family members of the victims.

The accident has left many in shock and grief, with officials working tirelessly to process the tragedy.
