Gukesh Becomes Youngest World Chess Champion at 18

Indian teenager Gukesh Dommaraju has made history by becoming the youngest chess world champion, defeating Chinese player Ding Liren in Singapore. The 18-year-old secured 7.5 points against 6.5 of his rival to surpass the achievement of Russian grandmaster Garry Kasparov, who won the title at age 22.

Gukesh, a 12-year-old prodigy when he became a grandmaster, has been touted as a rising star in the chess world after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year. His victory marks a proud moment for India and chess fans worldwide, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating him on his “remarkable accomplishment.”

Gukesh’s win is also personal, as he has been mentored by five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand. The young player credited his 10-year dream of becoming world champion finally coming true after Thursday’s match, which was a 14-round long classical event with a $2.5 million prize fund.
