A new Swiss study published in the journal Nature Communications has cast doubt on earlier research suggesting the Gulf Stream is weakening due to climate change. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Bern and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the US, used 24 Earth system models and observations of heat flow between the ocean and atmosphere in the North Atlantic. The findings indicate that no slowdown was detectable in the Gulf Stream’s circulation between 1963 and 2017. However, researchers caution that it’s uncertain whether this means the circulation has strengthened or remained stable. The study’s results challenge previous concerns that rising temperatures and melting ice could cause the system to collapse, potentially leading to severe climate consequences for Europe and other regions.
