Scientists from Singapore’s Duke-NUS Medical School have discovered a crucial connection between gut microbes and anxiety-related behavior. The researchers found that microbial metabolites called indoles play a direct role in regulating brain activity linked to anxiety.
The study published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine suggests that probiotics could be a remedy for mental health issues. Patrick Tan, senior vice-dean for research at Duke-NUS, stated that the findings have huge potential for people suffering from stress-related conditions, such as sleep disorders or those unable to tolerate standard psychiatric medications.
This discovery comes after recent links were found between gut bacteria and depression by Harvard University researchers and a team of French and Italian scientists who discovered how x-rays can provide clues on the processes linking gut neurons with brain activity that may trigger Alzheimer’s.
