A recent study published in Nature found a strong connection between an imbalance of gut microbiome composition and various diseases, including metabolic disorders, inflammatory conditions, and neurologic disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease is often misunderstood as solely a movement disorder, but research suggests it is actually a multi-systemic disease. The earliest sign of Parkinson’s is often constipation, which can occur decades before motor symptoms appear. The connection between the gut and brain, particularly through the gastrointestinal system, has long been established.
The study identified specific bacteria that increased in abundance in individuals with Parkinson’s disease, including Bifidobacterium dentium, Actinomyces oris, Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus fermentum, and others. Conversely, certain species decreased in abundance, such as short-chain fatty acid-producing species.
The research also found a correlation between the decrease of these beneficial bacteria and an increase in Bifidobacterium species. Furthermore, the study revealed that serotonin abnormalities are present at various stages of Parkinson’s disease, making it a potential early diagnostic marker.
Another study published in Movement Disorders supported these findings by linking common stomach issues like bloating and gas to degenerative diseases. Researchers discovered that nerve pathways between the gut and brain may also be linked to conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS), as well as mental health problems.
The study suggests that an unhealthy gut microbiome can contribute to brain disease, with these pathways traveling in both directions. Sufferers of Parkinson’s disease were found to be at a higher risk of developing another condition called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). However, scientists are cautioning that the bacteria may produce chemicals that damage nerves and pass on to the brain.
The researchers hope this new information will shed light on potential new treatments for degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s.
