H-E-B has taken the top spot in an annual ranking of grocery retailers for the fourth year in a row, outpacing other regional and national supermarkets such as Market Basket, Costco, and Walmart. According to customer data science firm Dunnhumby, H-E-B’s long-term customer value proposition has contributed to its success.
The ranking is based on factors including prices, promotions, quality of goods, digital offerings, speed, convenience, and consistency of prices and stock. Dunnhumby surveyed 11,000 shoppers and found that saving money through prices, promotions, and rewards was the most important factor for retailers’ success, with this factor becoming more important over time.
Regional grocers dominated the list, which is notable as other companies have expanded into new formats. Market Basket jumped to second place, while WinCo Foods vaulted 10 places to fourth. Costco remained third, Aldi rose two spots to fifth, and Amazon fell four spots to sixth.
Dunnhumby’s president, Matt O’Grady, attributed H-E-B’s success to understanding its customers and prioritizing efforts to save them money consistently with the company’s positioning.
