A US-based women-only dating app, Tea, has been hacked, exposing 72,000 images and personal information submitted by its users. The breach affected members who signed up before February 2024 and involved unauthorized access to photos, posts, and comments.
Tea Dating Advice allows women to conduct background checks on men and share red flags, but the company’s recent surge in popularity has also sparked criticism from some who claim it is anti-men. The app lets users verify identities, check for married or registered sex offenders, and run reverse image searches to prevent catfishing.
Despite measures in place to block screenshots, hackers gained access to additional 59,000 images over two years ago, including posts, comments, and direct messages. Tea stated that it is taking steps to protect its community and has worked with cybersecurity experts to address the issue. The company’s founder, Sean Cook, created Tea after witnessing his mother’s online dating experiences and aimed to create a safer space for women on dating apps.
