Hacks Returns with More Conflict and Chemistry

Hacks, the popular comedy series, has returned for its fourth season, bringing back old conflicts and introducing new dynamics between its characters. The show’s central dynamic between Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) remains a highlight, as the two women navigate their professional and personal relationship.

The season begins with Deborah landing her dream gig as a late-night host, but things are complicated by past conflicts. Last season ended with Deborah rescinding Ava’s offer to be head writer in favor of making her a regular writer, after Ava threatened to blackmail her over rumors about her past relationships.

This season, the tension between them is palpable. Ava seems to have forgotten that working with Deborah will require compromise and collaboration. The two engage in verbal sparring, mirroring their previous seasons’ conflicts. However, despite the animosity, both Smart and Einbinder bring undeniable chemistry to their performances, making the audience root for them.

The supporting cast continues to shine, including Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter), who have gained agency in their roles. New characters are introduced, including Michaela Watkins’ addition to the cast, adding more depth to the show.

While the show’s writing has its flaws, with Ava often being let off the hook too easily, the performances of Smart and Einbinder make up for it. The series’ circular dynamics may feel repetitive, but the talented cast keeps the show entertaining, even if it doesn’t stray from familiar patterns.
