Singer Halsey has come to the defense of Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney after her co-star’s American Eagle campaign sparked controversy. The denim ad, featuring the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” was criticized for its similarity to eugenicist language.
In response to the backlash, Halsey posted on Instagram Stories, criticizing fans who boycotted the movie “Americana” due to Sweeney’s ad. Halsey called out the 24-hour gossip cycle and claimed that the film’s director, Tony Tost, made an exceptional movie with a talented cast.
Halsey also addressed the criticism about the tagline, saying it was unfair for the news cycle to single out Sweeney and her crew for unrelated ads. The singer emphasized that their words are important in the current climate but should not overshadow the film’s value.
Tost also weighed in on the controversy, stating that movies can thrive despite surrounding backlash. He expressed optimism about how his film will hold up over time.
The backlash against Sweeney was partly due to her past voter registration status as a Republican in Florida, which was discovered by President Donald Trump during an interview. The president initially praised Sweeney’s ad, calling it the “HOTTEST” ad out there, before going on a rant about “WOKE” advertising and his feud with Taylor Swift.
Despite the controversy, Halsey has come to defend her co-star and the film, highlighting the importance of cinema over petty debates.
