Hamas Agrees to New Gaza Ceasefire Proposal from Egypt and Qatar

Hamas has agreed to a new ceasefire proposal from Egypt and Qatar, key mediators in Gaza ceasefire negotiations. The Palestinian militant group approved the proposal, which calls for an end to hostilities and the release of hostages.

According to Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas chief, the group received the proposal two days ago and dealt with it positively. However, he warned that Israel’s continued operations in Gaza would be a “red line” for the militant group.

The fragile truce that had brought relative calm to Gaza ended on March 18 when Israel resumed its bombing campaign across the territory. Talks between Hamas and mediators began in Doha earlier this week after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to seize parts of Gaza if the group did not release hostages.

Hamas warned the captives would return “in coffins” if Israel did not stop bombing the Palestinian territory. The Israeli military has since begun “ground activity” in the Jneina neighbourhood of Rafah to expand its security zone in southern Gaza.

The agreement is a significant development in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, and it remains to be seen whether Israel will accept the proposal and back down from its military operations in Gaza.
