A truce deal between Israel and Hamas is nearing completion, with mediators in Doha presenting a final draft to both sides. The agreement, which aims to end the conflict in Gaza, includes several key provisions.
According to reports, Hamas is likely to release 33 hostages during the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. Most of the hostages are believed to be alive, and their mortal remains are also expected to be released. Israel is ready to immediately implement the truce deal once it is signed.
US President Joe Biden expressed empathy towards Palestinians, saying they have been through hell. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that “pressure is building for Hamas to come to yes” as negotiations near completion.
The agreement includes provisions such as Israeli forces maintaining their presence along the Philadelphi Corridor and a buffer zone inside Gaza. Northern Gaza residents would also be allowed to return to their homes freely, although unspecified security arrangements would be in place.
However, Palestinian prisoners held responsible for killing Israelis would not be released into the West Bank but instead to the Gaza Strip or abroad after necessary agreements are made with foreign countries.
The negotiations, which have been ongoing for over a year, involve the US, Qatar, and Egypt. The release of 33 hostages is seen as a key part of the agreement, and its completion marks an important step towards ending the conflict in Gaza.
