Former Hamas hostage Eli Sharabi addressed the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, sharing his harrowing 505-day experience in captivity and urging world leaders to bring all remaining hostages home.
Sharabi’s story began on October 7, when he was taken from Kibbutz Be’eri during a Hamas attack that killed over 100 residents and took 30 hostage. His wife and two daughters were among those killed. Sharabi credits his own survival to a pita a day, but described the “pure hell” of starvation and beatings.
Sharabi claimed that Hamas stole millions of dollars in UN humanitarian aid meant for civilians, instead using it to fund its terrorist activities. He accused the United Nations, Red Cross, and world leaders of ignoring the plight of hostages and failing to act against Hamas’ human rights abuses.
Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon echoed Sharabi’s concerns, stating that the Security Council had “erased” the hostages from its agenda. He demanded action, saying, “The war will not end until the remaining hostages are returned home.”
