Lin-Manuel Miranda and producer Jeff Seller have canceled the spring 2026 run of hit musical “Hamilton” at the Kennedy Center, citing the center’s politicization under President Donald Trump’s leadership. The decision comes after Trump removed several Democratic members from the bipartisan board of directors and replaced them with loyalists.
Miranda stated that he cannot support an institution that has been forced to betray its mission as a national cultural center that fosters free expression of art. Seller added that the “spirit of nonpartisanship” ended on February 7, when Trump fired former President Deborah Rutter and appointed himself as chairman.
The cancellation follows several high-profile artists’ decision to quit performing at the Kennedy Center due to concerns over the center’s new direction. These include Issa Rae, rock band Low Cut Connie, Pulitzer Prize-winning singer Rhiannon Giddens, and opera singer Renee Fleming.
Seller emphasized that “Hamilton” was initially performed at the Kennedy Center during Trump’s first administration, but ultimately decided not to return due to the center’s changed policies. Miranda stated that he will not be part of an institution that no longer aligns with its original mission.
