A hammerhead shark recently crashed down on the Splinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, interrupting a disc golf game. The unusual event occurred when an osprey lost its lunch after being harassed by crows near the ocean.
The osprey, known as a “fish hawk,” was carrying a small, dead hammerhead shark that is longer than a foot. It’s likely the osprey picked up the fish at least half a mile away from the ocean before losing its grip due to harassment by crows. The birds’ technique called mobbing can be used to protect their territories during breeding season.
Seeing a shark in the woods is rare, and this incident was confirmed by witnesses. Worldwide, there are 10 known species of hammerhead sharks, with several populations found along the southern United States coast. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources has detected three types of hammerheads in coastal waters off the state and Georgia.
The identity of the hammerhead that fell from the sky remains unclear, as it is not definitively matched to any of the known species in the area.
