A recall has been issued for hand soap produced by DermaRite Industries after the discovery of Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia), a bacteria that can cause serious and life-threatening infections, including sepsis.
The affected products were distributed nationwide in the US and Puerto Rico, but the FDA did not disclose which retailers sold them. Those with compromised immune systems, such as healthcare workers or family members of patients with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk of developing severe infections.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), B. cepacia poses little threat to healthy individuals but can be hazardous to those with weakened immune systems, particularly cystic fibrosis patients.
As of August 8, no adverse reactions related to the recall have been reported. Consumers who purchased the affected product are advised to return it to their place of purchase for a full refund.
