Harbaugh Loves Free-Kick Field Goal Rule

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed his fondness for the free-kick field goal rule after his team’s 34-27 win over Denver on Thursday night. The last time a team attempted a fair-catch kick was in 2019, but the 57-yard attempt by Cameron Dicker marked the first successful conversion of its kind.

Harbaugh has always been drawn to this rule, having tried one with the 49ers in 2013 that went 71 yards. He praised Dicker’s performance, saying it gave the team momentum going into halftime. Harbaugh also appreciated the simplicity of the free kick, as it eliminates the need to return eight yards from the snap.

The successful attempt was also notable for being the first since 1976. Harbaugh described the moment as “cool” and highlighted the importance of having a reliable kicker like Dicker on his team.
