Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has been suspended for three games as part of an NCAA penalty imposed on the program over a sign-stealing scandal. The fine, which is in the tens of millions of dollars, marks another blow to former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh’s legacy.
Harbaugh, who led Michigan to a national title in 2022-23, has been hit with additional penalties stemming from his involvement in the scandal. He had previously received a four-year show-cause order for recruiting violations and now faces an additional 10-year penalty for his role in the sign-stealing scheme.
The NCAA has found “overwhelming” evidence of a cover-up by Michigan staff members, including Harbaugh’s claim that he did not know about the operation run by Connor Stalions. The organization has also dropped its proposal to impose a postseason ban on Michigan student-athletes, citing unfairness to those who were affected by past violations.
Moore will miss two games this season and one in 2025 due to the suspension. Michigan’s performance was strong last year, finishing 8-5 despite struggling early under Moore’s leadership. The program is now planning to appeal the NCAA’s decision.
