Harvard Professor Warns of Cancer Risk from Ultra-Processed Foods

A doctor has raised concerns that a common food in many households may be linked to cancer. Dr Andy Chan, a Harvard professor and researcher into cancer, says ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are being linked to various forms of cancer. UPFs are heavily used in the UK, making up over 50% of our daily calories.

According to the NOVA classification, UPFs contain ingredients that can’t be found in normal home kitchens, such as additives and emulsifiers. These foods often have high levels of saturated fat, salt, and sugar, which can harm our health.

Research suggests that consuming UPFs may increase the risk of colon cancer and obesity-related cancers. Dr Chan says specific types of UPFs may be more harmful than others.

Examples of UPFs include mass-produced bread, breakfast cereals, instant soups, crisps, biscuits, ice cream, carbonated drinks, and some alcoholic beverages. Even everyday foods like sliced bread and dairy cheeses can be classified as processed if they have extra ingredients added during production.

The British Heart Foundation notes that while more research is needed, it’s clear that UPFs can harm our heart health. However, they also emphasize that a balanced diet with moderation is key to reaping the benefits of these foods.
