Harvard scientist Avi Loeb has proposed sending a six-word message to the mysterious space object 3I/ATLAS as it approaches Earth. The object was first detected by the ATLAS survey telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile on July 1, 2025.
Loeb’s claims have sparked debate about whether 3I/ATLAS is an engineered or natural space object. He argues that its unusual characteristics, including a “glow” without a prominent cometary tail, suggest it may be artificial.
In a recent interview with the MailOnline, Loeb shared his proposed message: “Hello, welcome to our neighborhood. Peace!” This message aims to make a friendly first impression in case 3I/ATLAS contains alien life.
Loeb believes that establishing communication with an extraterrestrial species could be the key to a longer relationship. He explains that without communication, interactions might be perceived as transactional and lacking meaning.
To achieve this, Loeb suggests developing a common language through artificial intelligence systems. However, he warns that exchanging messages could be different from in-person encounters.
3I/ATLAS is set to reach its closest point to the Sun on October 29, 2025, with some predictions suggesting it could arrive at Earth by Christmas.
