Harvey Weinstein Back in Hospital, Faces Leukemia Diagnosis Amid Rikers Island Lawsuit

Harvey Weinstein, the convicted rapist and ailing producer, is back in hospital at Manhattan’s Bellevue after being transported from Rikers Island due to an alarming blood test result. His attorney, Imran H. Ansari, stated that Weinstein will remain in Bellevue for emergency treatment until his condition stabilizes.

Weinstein, 72, was recently sued by the City of New York and others over “deplorable conditions” at Rikers Island, where he has been held since being convicted of sex crimes by a NYC jury in early 2020. His attorney claims that Weinstein’s deprivation of medical care constitutes both medical malpractice and a violation of his constitutional rights.

This is the third time Weinstein has visited Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in the USA, in almost as many months. He was previously hospitalized for Covid-19 and pneumonia in July, and received heart surgery at Bellevue in September after being diagnosed with bone marrow cancer in October.

Weinstein’s lawsuit against the City of New York and others alleges that he has been denied adequate medical care while incarcerated on Rikers Island. His case is set to go to trial next year, although his health and civil suit permitting.

The controversy surrounding Weinstein’s imprisonment and alleged mistreatment raises questions about what constitutes cruel and unusual punishment for a convicted rapist. Critics argue that Weinstein should not be receiving special treatment due to his celebrity status, while supporters believe that his medical needs must be prioritized.
