A Manhattan jury has found film mogul Harvey Weinstein guilty of committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree against Miriam Haley, one of his accusers. The verdict marks a major victory for the #MeToo movement and comes after two previous convictions on similar charges were overturned on appeal.
Weinstein was acquitted of a second charge of sexually assaulting Kaja Sokola, but the jury did not reach a unanimous verdict on a charge involving Jessica Mann, who alleges that Weinstein raped her. The judge has advised the jurors to continue deliberations on this charge.
This verdict follows Weinstein’s previous convictions in New York and California, where he was sentenced to 23 years and 16 years in prison, respectively. During his trial, Weinstein denied all allegations, claiming the interactions with his accusers were consensual.
The partial verdict came after a week of jury deliberations, which appeared to be heading towards a mistrial due to tensions among jurors. The foreperson reported concerns about jurors making threatening comments and feeling unsafe. However, prosecutors disputed this claim, saying the foreperson seemed “stubborn” rather than fearful.
Miriam Haley expressed hope that the verdict would bring new awareness around sexual violence and empower others to speak out against abuse. Kaja Sokola called the result a “big win for everyone,” while Jessica Mann accused Weinstein’s legal team of conducting a smear campaign against her.
