Hawks Acquire Asa Newell from Pelicans for Draft Rights

The Atlanta Hawks have completed a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, acquiring the rights to Asa Newell and a 2026 first-round draft pick in exchange for the rights to Derik Queen. The deal is considered favorable to both teams.

Hawks General Manager Onsi Saleh expressed his excitement about adding Newell to the team, calling him “unbelievable.” Newell played one collegiate season at Georgia, averaging 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors four times during the 2024-25 campaign.

As a freshman, Newell set multiple records for the Bulldogs, including leading them in scoring and rebounding since Jumaine Jones in 1997-98. He also secured seven double-doubles and registered a season-high 21-point, 17-rebound performance against Oklahoma.

The 6-9 forward impressed with his debut performance at Tennessee Tech, scoring 26 points on 13-22 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds, one steal, and three blocks in 32 minutes. Newell’s achievements earned him recognition alongside Atlanta Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins for the highest offensive output by a Bulldog freshman in their debut.

Newell will join the team as they continue to build for the future, with the acquisition of his rights and a 2026 first-round draft pick adding depth to their roster.
