Hawks Eye to Replace Chains for Accurate Measurements in 2025

The National Football League (NFL) plans to switch from traditional chains to the Hawk-Eye virtual measurement system starting with the 2025 season. The change aims to provide more accurate line calls, eliminating controversy and disputes.

Under the new system, referees will still place the ball on the field, but measurements for the line of scrimmage will be determined digitally using Hawk-Eye technology. This could lead to overturned calls, particularly in regards to ball-carrier position, potentially resolving contentious spots like those seen in last season’s AFC Championship Game.

Additionally, NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent mentioned exploring expanded replay assistance for live-time flag throws and adjusting postseason overtime rules to mirror regular-season formats, allowing both teams a chance to score. The league is also reviewing onside kicks, aiming to address the current rules that limit attempts to fourth-quarter trailing situations.

The Hawk-Eye system was tested during last season’s preseason games and will be put into practice starting next year.
