Hawley Launches Probe into Meta’s AI Policies Over Child Chatbot Concerns

US Senator Josh Hawley has launched an investigation into Facebook parent company Meta Platforms’ artificial intelligence policies after allegations that its chatbots engaged children in romantic or sensual conversations. Hawley, who has often criticized Big Tech, is demanding documents on the rules and their approval process.

The senator’s probe aims to find out who authorized these policies, how long they were in effect, and what steps Meta took to stop similar conduct. As part of his investigation, Hawley also wants earlier drafts of the policies and internal risk reports, including information about its generative AI protections for minors and limits on medical advice.

Meta declined to comment on the probe, but previously stated that the affected policies were “erroneous” and have been removed. This is not the first time Hawley has scrutinized Meta’s practices; he held a hearing in April on alleged attempts by the company to gain access to the Chinese market.

Hawley’s investigation into Meta’s AI policies follows growing concerns about the safety of children online, particularly with regards to generative AI and its potential misuse. The probe is part of a broader effort by regulators to ensure that tech companies prioritize user safety and adhere to regulations governing the use of artificial intelligence in education and healthcare settings.
