HBO’s New Harry Potter Series Casts Its Stars and Crew

HBO is set to revive the beloved Harry Potter franchise with a new scripted series, promising a “faithful” adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original books. The show will have seven seasons, one for each book in the series, and fans can expect more detail and character development than ever before.

The main trio of Gryffindor students – Harry, Ron, and Hermione – have been cast with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The casting process drew in “tens of thousands of children” who auditioned for the roles.

Faculty from Hogwarts are also set to appear, including Paapa Essiedu’s portrayal of Severus Snape, which has sparked controversy. Meanwhile, John Lithgow will play Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The show’s creative team includes Francesca Gardiner as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, alongside fellow Succession producer Mark Mylod. Oscar-winning costume designer Holly Waddington is also on board to design the wardrobe for the new series.

J.K. Rowling herself will serve as an executive producer, despite criticism over her views on trans issues. HBO has defended her involvement, stating that she’s a key creative force behind the show.

Production on the series is set to begin at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in summer 2025, with a debut expected in late 2026 or early 2027. The cast of young actors will have time to grow and mature over the course of the decade-long project, which promises to bring new life to the magical world of Hogwarts.
