Health Ministry Teams Up With Pune To Tackle Guillain-Barré Outbreak

**
The Health Ministry has sent a team to Pune to address a recent outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder. Affected individuals are experiencing symptoms like diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever. The cause is believed to be the bacterial infection Campylobacter jejuni, which can also lead to foodborne illnesses.

Pune-based neurologist Dr Sudhir Kothari explains that GBS typically occurs within one to three weeks after exposure to bacteria or viruses. It affects adults over 50 and is treatable with early intervention like immunoglobulin therapy but not contagious.

GBS symptoms include weakness, numbness, and severe muscle weakness in adults. Recovery can take two to four weeks, though some may need several months for full recovery. Prevention tips include boiling water, washing produce, and avoiding raw foods.

For more details or severe cases, contact local health authorities or visit the Pune-based neurology department.
