The US government has declared a power emergency in the southeastern states due to a severe heat wave. A heat wave is causing a surge in electricity demand as people rely heavily on air conditioning, straining the country’s grids. In response, the Energy Department has allowed Duke Energy Corp. to exceed certain pollution limits and increase power generation. This move aims to address the increased electrical load amid temperatures expected to reach 100F (38C) in parts of North Carolina and South Carolina.
