Helldivers 2 Review Bomb Sparks Accusations of Narrative Manipulation

Helldivers 2 has seen a significant spike in negative Steam reviews, with over 2,600 reviews posted on May 29 alone, compared to 301 on May 28 and 62 on May 27. The majority of these reviews are from Chinese users, who have been vocal about their frustration with the game’s narrative.

According to reports, the issue may have originated from a translation error in the Chinese version of Helldivers 2, which led players to believe that the city of Equality-On-Sea could be reclaimed outright with enough effort. This misunderstanding has sparked accusations that developer Arrowhead is manipulating the narrative to shape the game’s storyline.

Players have been challenged to defend key cities, but so far, they have largely failed. The two remaining cities, Equality-On-Sea and Prosperity City, are still contested, with players unable to reach 100% defense of Equality-On-Sea due to circumstances beyond their control.

While some players may be genuinely frustrated with the game’s mechanics, others have been accused of being “illiterate” and engaging in nationalist analogies. The situation has become “needless” as per one observer, who suggests that players should focus on finding ways to save Super Earth rather than getting bogged down in controversy.

Despite the chaos, it appears that Helldivers 2 players are slowly starting to find common ground, with a recent Major Order brokering peace between the bugdivers and squiddivers. As one observer notes, there is more to the game’s narrative than meets the eye, and players would do well to remember that war is not always won or lost in a single battle.
