Hezly Rivera has taken a major step forward in her young career, winning her first national title at the U.S. Championships. The 17-year-old gymnast, who was part of the Olympic team last year, showcased a polished steadiness and confidence that earned her the top spot.
Rivera’s victory came after a two-day total of 112.000, which put her ahead of Leanne Wong and solidified her position to lead the American delegation at the world championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, next month. The young gymnast credited her performance to “letting go” of pressure and focusing on her hard work.
Rivera’s success was not without challenges. She faced a tough competition from Wong, who started strong but couldn’t maintain her form throughout. However, Rivera responded well to each rotation, posting top scores on three events.
The young gymnast’s confidence is evident in her words: “Everything fell into place.” Her victory has come as a relief, and she’s now locked up a spot in the world championship selection camp next month.
Rivera’s achievement is just the beginning of her journey. Fellow gymnast Joscelyn Roberson, who finished third, is also making waves with her experience and maturity. Roberson, who was once Biles’ sidekick, has emerged as one of the leaders of the new generation.
With Rivera leading the charge, the US women’s gymnastics team is looking strong heading into the world championships. Sky Blakely’s impressive performances on uneven bars and balance beam have also put her in contention for a spot on the team.
