HHS Lays Off Thousands, Leaving Employees Without Guidance on Filing Discrimination Claims

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is undergoing significant layoffs, with thousands of employees receiving reduction-in-force (RIF) notices. In some cases, employees are being directed to send employment discrimination complaints to officials who have passed away. HHS plans to eliminate 10,000 jobs through nonvoluntary layoffs, with hundreds more set to be cut from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The moves have left many employees in a state of uncertainty, including those working on life-saving research into genetic diseases such as muscular dystrophy. As one employee noted, “Our hopes are dependent on new drug development,” and the loss of talent could jeopardize momentum gained over 25 years of research.
