Hidetaka Miyazaki on The Duskbloods: A New PvPvE Experience

FromSoftware’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, shares his vision for the upcoming game, The Duskbloods. In an exclusive interview, Miyazaki discusses what led to this title being developed for Nintendo Switch 2, and how the new hardware allowed him to stay true to the original concept.

The Duskbloods is a PvPvE (player vs player and player vs enemy) focused game that deviates from FromSoftware’s traditional approach. According to Miyazaki, the company has always been interested in exploring the PvPvE structure due to its broad range of game-design ideas. This allows for challenging enemy encounters while leveraging their experience.

Miyazaki also addresses the misconception that The Duskbloods will shift ToS fromSoftware’s direction towards more multiplayer-focused titles. Elden Ring and other single-player focused games are still planned, showcasing the company’s commitment to a variety of game styles.

The game takes place in multiple time periods, with maps inspired by Gothic and Victorian eras, as well as the closing years of the early modern period. The Bloodsworn, a group of characters with superhuman abilities, compete for “First Blood” in a bid to revive humanity.

A key theme in The Duskbloods is the symbolism of blood, representing history, power, and the fates that bind those who have surpassed human limitations. This conceptual approach to blood sets the game apart from traditional depictions.

The title “Duskbloods” directly refers to the Bloodsworn themselves, a collective term for characters controlled by players.
