Two high school students from The Woodlands, Justin Huang and Victoria Ou, won a $50,000 prize for creating a microplastics filtration system that uses ultrasonic waves to remove 84% to 94% of microplastics in a single pass. Their prototype system targets the tiny plastic particles that persist in water and food sources, with research ongoing on their impact on human health.
