Last night’s 97th Academy Awards marked a historic milestone in the film industry, with several record-breaking wins that highlighted underrepresented groups and trailblazers. The ceremony saw its first-ever Oscar wins from a Dominican American actor (Zoe Saldaña), Latvia’s first Academy Award-winning movie (Gints Zilbalodis’ Flow), and the first Black man to win Best Costume Design (Paul Tazewell for Wicked).
Sean Baker became the first person to win four Oscars for the same film in the same year, taking home awards for Best Picture, Best Directing, and two acting accolades for his movie Anora. The ceremony also saw notable wins from Adrien Brody for Best Actor and Kieran Culkin for Best Supporting Actor.
The historic night also recognized achievements by underrepresented groups, including the first International Feature Film win for I’m Still Here and a Cinematography award for Lol Crawley in The Brutalist.
