HMPV Cases Rise in China Amid Winter Respiratory Virus Season

China is reporting an increase in cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a common respiratory virus that circulates during the winter months. However, health officials stress that there is no evidence to suggest a new or unusual outbreak.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows a rise in HMPV cases in the US since November 2024, with 1.94% of weekly tests positive for the virus as of December 28. By comparison, flu cases are at 18.71%, while COVID-19 cases are at 7.10%.

Experts say HMPV is well-known to healthcare professionals and typically increases during respiratory virus season due to close living conditions and increased exposure. Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine, notes that the virus spreads through secretions from coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, and touching contaminated objects.

Symptoms of HMPV include cough, nasal congestion, fever, and shortness of breath, which can be indistinguishable from other respiratory viruses. Young children, adults aged 65 and older, are at a higher risk of developing bronchitis or pneumonia if infected.

There is currently no treatment for HMPV, aside from providing supportive care to patients with moderate or severe symptoms. Prevention measures include following basic hygiene practices, such as handwashing, covering the nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing, and staying home when sick.

As China deals with rising HMPV cases, health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination against other respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV. Experts stress that getting vaccinated can reduce the risk of co-infection and help healthcare professionals quickly diagnose certain illnesses.
