Holiday Box Office: Disney’s Moana 2 Reigns Supreme

The holiday box office has kicked off with a bang, with Disney’s Moana 2 taking the top spot. The animated film raked in an estimated $52 million in North America over the weekend, boosting its cumulative domestic gross to $300 million.

Wicked: Part 1 came in second, collecting nearly $34.9 million and earning $320.5 million domestically, making it the year’s fourth-highest-grossing film. Despite not winning the weekend, Wicked continues to dance through its cinematic life.

Disney’s Moana 2 has earned a staggering $600 million globally, making it the fifth highest-earning movie in less than two weeks of work. Gladiator II held onto its third-place spot with an additional $12.5 million, bringing its total earnings to $132.7 million.

New releases like Pushpa: The Rule—Part 2 and Red One struggled to gain traction, while a re-release of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar landed in sixth place with $4.4 million. Solo Leveling: ReAwakening and Y2K rounded out the top 10, finishing seventh and eighth respectively.

The holiday box office also saw Werewolves flop, earning just $1.1 million on over 1,300 screens. Jude Law’s crime thriller The Order didn’t fare much better, landing in twelfth place with only $900,000.

Fans of Christian movies and Christmas films have differing opinions on the recent releases, including The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and Interstellar. Some praise their faith-based storytelling, while others criticize their perceived corniness or sentimentality.

Ultimately, the holiday box office is a mixed bag, but Disney’s Moana 2 remains the clear winner. As the year goes on, it will be interesting to see how other films fare in the competition.
