As families gather for the holidays, infectious disease specialist Peter Chin-Hong warns of the “Big Four” circulating pathogens: influenza, COVID-19, RSV, and norovirus. The four viruses are currently on the rise in the US, with COVID-19 showing high levels in the eastern states and the flu grabbing most physicians’ attention.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a low outlook for the severity of this season’s flu, but Chin-Hong notes that the UK and South America have seen significantly higher flu cases. He suspects that the CDC’s outlook may be based on carryover immunity from last year’s flu season.
To combat the spread of these viruses, experts recommend “The three V’s”: Vaccinate, ventilate, and wash your hands often. Wearing masks can also help when indoors or in close proximity to others. For norovirus, which spreads through contaminated items, keeping hands away from the face is crucial.
Additionally, researchers are monitoring H5N1 bird flu, which has the potential to mix with seasonal flu, but there’s no evidence it can be transmitted between people. To stay safe, avoid raw milk, eggs, and undercooked meat, and follow proper cooking techniques.
As for COVID-19, while the number of cases is increasing in municipal wastewater, experts are cautious about a surge in hospitalizations due to carryover immunity from last year’s outbreaks. However, they remain vigilant about the virus’s adaptability and low vaccination rates.
By taking these precautions and staying informed, individuals can help prevent the spread of these viruses during the holiday season. Remember, if you’re not feeling well, it’s always best to stay home and isolate yourself to keep others safe.
