Hollow Knight Silksong Delivers a Visually Stunning Sequel

Team Cherry’s highly anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight has finally arrived, and it shows no signs of disappointing. During my demo at gamescom 2025, I was treated to a glimpse into the game’s world, mechanics, and combat system. While only a short 20-minute experience, Silksong felt like a return to form for the series, with its grassy zones, platforming challenges, and simple battles reminiscent of the original Hollow Knight.

The demo introduced me to two distinct areas: Moss Grotto and Deep Docks. Moss Grotto was an excellent starting point, feeling very much like a re-introduction to the core mechanics of Hollow Knight. The sunlit grassy zone featured a short but sweet section of platforming and battles against insects. A boss fight against a large queen-bee-like insect proved satisfying, with the game’s action platforming 101 still delivering.

In contrast, Deep Docks presented an entirely different proposition. Tools like kunai and a dash ability added complexity to the gameplay, reflected in the level design that comprises clanking metal elevators and semi-hidden levers. The addition of these tools made navigation more challenging, with enemies capable of far more than simple prods and darts.

The combat system has been tweaked to make players feel more powerful compared to the original. Health regain is now divorced from skills, allowing for more aggressive maneuvers. However, this change may lead to fights feeling tiresome if exploration and progress are halted too often.

One of the standout features of Silksong is its visually stunning design. The environments are more colourful than ever, with beautifully crafted backdrops and a delightful balance between precision and floaty jumping. The addition of mantling helps to enhance platforming through mazes, making it more enjoyable.

Overall, my initial impressions suggest that Hollow Knight Silksong is worth the wait. Team Cherry’s deliberate design choices aim to create a power trip sensation, with revamped combat mechanics and repainted world elements working in concert to deliver an engaging experience. While only a small taste of what the game has to offer, Silksong is already singing its praises.
