The Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland was abuzz with excitement on March 19, as stars from the film “Freaky Tales” walked the red carpet for its premiere. The movie, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, blends magical realism with 80s nostalgia, paying homage to Oakland’s punk scene.
Hollywood heavy-hitters Jay Ellis and Pedro Pascal joined cast members, including rappers Mistah F.A.B., Kamaiyah, and P-Lo, for a night of glamour. Ben Mendelsohn, Dominique Thorne, and late actor Angus Cloud also made appearances in the film.
Director Anna Boden expressed gratitude to the attendees, saying she was “happy to bring this movie here” after facing challenges during production. The audience cheered as familiar East Bay locations featured prominently in the film’s soundtrack, curated by Raphael Saadiq.
The movie, set partly in Oakland and Berkeley, tells a love letter to the city’s punk scene. Actors attending the post-screening party praised their experience filming on location. “I love Oakland,” said Pedro Pascal. “Freaky Tales” hits theaters nationwide on April 4.
