Hollywood is taking aim at Midjourney, a popular AI image generator, after Disney and NBCUniversal sued the company for copyright infringement. The lawsuit claims that Midjourney’s technology creates unauthorized copies of iconic characters from Star Wars to The Simpsons.
Disney and NBCUniversal’s 110-page lawsuit describes Midjourney as “the quintessential copyright free-rider” and a “bottomless pit of plagiarism.” They argue that the AI tool generates endless, unlicensed copies of their copyrighted works. The companies have shared examples of images created by Midjourney’s tools, which closely resemble their original characters.
Midjourney has not commented on the lawsuit. However, its use by many news media companies, including Business Insider’s parent Axel Springer, may raise questions about its potential for misuse in the industry. The film and TV industry has been cautious about AI due to concerns it will replace IP and talent. This new lawsuit could impact plans to work with AI companies like Midjourney.
