Homs, Syria’s ‘Capital of the Revolution’, Suffered Brutal Repression

Homs, a city in northern Syria, was once hailed as the “capital of the revolution” against Bashar al-Assad’s regime. However, its people paid a heavy price for rebelling against the dictatorship.

The city’s brutal suppression has been described by diplomats and journalists alike. In February 2012, journalist Marie Colvin was killed by the Assad regime in the Baba Amr neighborhood, which was under siege at the time. Despite facing unimaginable hardship, Homs remains a pivotal location in Syria’s ongoing conflict.

Located north of Damascus, Homs has borne witness to some of the most brutal acts of violence during the Syrian civil war. The city’s fate serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of rebellion against authoritarian regimes.
