Honda Shifts Civic Production from Mexico to Indiana Amid Trump Tariffs

Honda is moving production of its next-generation hybrid Civic model from Guanajuato, Mexico, to the Indiana Auto Plant in Greensburg, Indiana, as the US government prepares to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods. The move is expected to start in 2028 and will see annual production of around 210,000 vehicles.

The decision comes after a month-long suspension of Trump’s tariffs, which were set to go into effect this week. The US imported $69 billion worth of cars from Mexico last year, making it the country’s largest trade partner. The move is Honda’s latest attempt to secure its production in the US, following a significant increase in profit and sales gains in 2023.

The Indiana Auto Plant, which employs around 2,700 workers, has previously been responsible for producing Honda models such as the Civic Hatchback, CR-V, and Insight Hybrid. The company has also had talks with competitors Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., but those negotiations ended early this year.
