Hong Kong is set to experience strong winds and rough seas on Sunday as tropical cyclone Wipha approaches the Pearl River Estuary. The Observatory has warned of a Gale or Storm Signal No 8 between midnight and 2am, with local winds expected to reach gale-force levels. Adverse weather conditions will persist throughout the day, posing risks to navigation and coastal activities.
The acting senior scientific officer stated that flooding is possible in low-lying areas, while high seas and swells are also anticipated. Residents are advised to stay away from shorelines and refrain from engaging in water sports due to hazardous conditions. The Observatory’s assessment of Wipha’s intensity will determine the need for higher warning signals on Sunday morning, keeping the public informed of any potential threats.
