Hong Kong Files WTO Complaint Against US Tariffs

Hong Kong is set to file a complaint against new US tariffs on its products with the World Trade Organization (WTO). The US has imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods and ended a customs exception that allowed small-value parcels to enter the US without paying tax. Hong Kong’s government considers the measures “grossly inconsistent with the relevant WTO rules” and urges the US to rectify its actions.

This is not the first time Hong Kong has taken its trade disputes with the US to the WTO. In 2022, arbitrators concluded that the US was out of line in requiring products from Hong Kong to be labeled as “Made in China”. The WTO has confirmed it received notice of China’s request for consultations with the US regarding the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods.

The dispute-resolution process at the WTO has been hindered by blocked appointments of judges on its appeals court. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s post office will continue to suspend shipping items containing goods to the United States until further notice.
