Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Icon Jimmy Lai’s Trial Delayed Due to Health Concerns

Hong Kong pro-democracy icon Jimmy Lai appeared in court for closing arguments in his landmark trial, which was delayed due to torrential rain. The 77-year-old faces accusations of collusion with foreign forces and sedition, punishable by life in prison.

Lai’s health has been a concern throughout the trial, prompting multiple adjournments. He is noticeably thinner after entering court and had heart issues that required medical attention.

The prosecution claimed Lai refused to wear a Holter monitor to track his heart rhythm, but his lawyers disputed this. A judge ordered an adjournment until Monday for medical staff to install the device.

Lai has been held in solitary confinement since December 2020 as part of Beijing’s national security law crackdown on activists and protesters.
