Hong Kong property tycoon Lee Shau-kee has died at the age of 97, according to his firm Henderson Land Development. As chairman for over 40 years, he was one of the city’s richest men. Born in China’s Guangdong Province, Lee began his business career in gold and foreign currency exchange before moving into real estate.
In 1958, he co-founded Sun Hung Kai Properties with two other founders, but left to start Henderson Land Development in 1976. His sons took over the company after his retirement in 2019. At the height of his wealth, Lee was named the richest man in Asia and the world’s fourth wealthiest person.
A philanthropist, Lee made significant contributions to education centres and job development programs. He received Hong Kong’s highest honour, the Grand Bauhinia Medal, in 2007 for his contributions to society. The city’s Chief Executive has praised Lee as an “outstanding business leader and entrepreneur” who played a key role in Hong Kong’s economic development and prosperity.
