Hormonal Contraceptives Linked to Clot Risk

A new study published in JAMA Network Open has found that some progesterone-only hormonal contraceptives may carry a similar clot risk to certain combined pills. Researchers from Aalborg University Hospital in Denmark analyzed health data from nearly 1.4 million women and found that certain hormonal methods, such as vaginal rings, low-dose estrogen pills, and injections like medroxyprogesterone, had the highest risk for developing venous thromboembolisms (VTEs).

The study’s lead author, Harman Gailan Hassan Yonis, noted that updated risk estimates were found for newer formulations of hormonal birth control methods. Combined pills and injections showed higher VTE rates compared to other hormonal methods. The lowest risk was associated with intrauterine devices.

While the study’s findings may not change prescribing guidelines immediately, it highlights the importance of personalized counseling for women concerned about clot risks. The researchers emphasized that the absolute risk might differ across ethnic groups due to varying genetic and environmental factors.
